Hello everyone. It's been a while. A significant version of "a while". I am referring to the extent of a while that means I avoided posting unless it was neutral or good news in an effort to not contribute to the age of doom scrolling. I followed this avoidance all of 2020, and now, in March of 2021, I feel I can ease up.

WE MADE IT. Many didn't. I feel lucky to be here to write my nonsense and make stuff.

I am sure everyone with internet access or ears has been told that if the year 2020 for businesses was a party balloon, it would get 1 star on yelp. This would be a leftover balloon from a week old party bunch. And it would be shriveled up, rolling around on the floor, covered in dust from the static cling, trailing a tangled ribbon of despair. Not a good look, right?

So in our year of quiet time, I thought of ways to keep making all the things. So I brought on my mother, Suzanne, to create a line of quilts and home goods.

I bet some readers didn't follow how I made the jump from jewelry to quilts. Limber up for the leap, let's follow this train of thought.

I pursue the lost wax casting method to preserve the practice start to finish. Every step, from the sculpting or carving of wax to the final polished, market ready product is done by hands. Mostly my own. This is becoming rare in an age of 3D printing and mass production. 100% of precious metals I cast are recycled, which makes Momma Earth happy.

My actual momma, Suzanne, is a phenomenal seamstress, hand embroidery artist, and quilter. These are also arts being lost to mass production. And in the case of mass production home decor and quilts, it feeds into maintaining the cycle of fast, disposable fashions. These flimsy fashions are why college students who live on their XL Twin bed in the dorm need a new comforter or duvet every year. These goods aren't made of quality materials and will wear out just in time to hit a landfill near you right before the back to school sales start. Convenient, huh?

Hello from the other side. I see you made the jump.

SAM Originals is about actual people using their hands, hearts, and brains to design and make quality products. We want to make products that will exceed your expectations, and maybe get people to rethink the value these vanishing handcrafts and arts.

I'm Sam.

I make unicorns and mermaids. Professionally!

I'm happy to still be here.
